A Future Medicine Course: Chinese Medicine as Heart Medicine - Returning to Health Through the Inner Light

Today begins the year of the Horse, and it does feel like the last few knots have been untied as I step forward into this life.

And once again, I have my amazing super mother to thank for this.

As the relatively shy and introverted person that I am (believe it or not, yes, I am Italian and there IS a dragon living inside me, but there is also a shy snail that inhabits my inner Self) I felt quite reluctant to even think to do something like this.

But we all come to a point when we have to decide where we are going to go in life, and with the help of my mother and a few other dear friends and family, I decided to finally accept the nudge and take the leap!

What led me to this is one powerful life-changing experience that demonstrated to me that there is profound organising intelligence within the body, an energy that can change our lives in ways we might consider impossible.

Healing Disease? It's not About What's Wrong

When I first started on my journey, experiencing a variety of symptoms from digestive complaints, to anxiety, insomnia and even panic attacks, I was laser focussed on the idea of 'getting rid of the symptoms'. It felt like a fight or a war, with the end goal being 'health'.

If you ask me now what that meant, I am not sure I can answer the question! We are so immersed in a society that pushes symptom relief as the solution that leads to getting rid of our pain, that (I feel) we hardly stop to ask ourselves: what is health?

And this applies to most fields of medicine. Even when considering holistic, integrative approaches, the same recipe is applied: symptoms, differential diagnosis, pathology...in essence: what's wrong with the body?

When you go to Chinese Medicine school we too were automatically ‘channelled’ down the path of ‘healing disease’. We spend thousands of hours studying pathology and immersing ourselves into the thoughts surrounding disease. This, of course, is necessary (to an extent) for we must be able to at least understand what is happening.

However, as I practice Chinese Medicine and become increasingly more immersed in this field, I have also began to notice how its Essence is calling me towards a rather different direction.

As I bring myself closer to the Classics and the Spirit of this ancient Medicine, I find myself asking: is this all there is to it?

Feeling the Light Within - From Fixing to Remembering

Many months ago I had a profound transformative experience. I was still an Acupuncture and TCM student, and the question of what it means to heal was constantly occupying my mind. During many years on my spiritual path, and as I worked to release myself from the pain I was feeling, I came to the conclusion that not only are we Spiritual beings, but we also Divine. When some say God is inside of us, and we are 'God', I felt this very much resonated with what I knew to be true for me.

This knowing though still left some form of 'doubt' or perhaps, like St Thomas would say: "I won't believe it unless I see the nail wounds in his hands, put my fingers into them, and place my hand into the wound in his side".

This however was about to change, when, as I was driving down a county lane, turning the phrase 'God is inside, not somewhere outside of you' round and round in my head - I had the most powerful experience of my life.

It felt like dropping inside my atoms, and feeling the voice of God. The Light inside, the particle of God, the organising intelligence of the Cosmos emanating from deep within me, it was so close I could touch it. And at that moment, I came to realise beyond any doubt, that this was ME.

That day, I felt this presence so tangibly that it gave me one hundred percent certainty that this presence is where life changing healing can be contacted.

And this experience also gave me 'the answer' to my question: what is healing?

And, as I progress with Chinese Medicine, all I can see is confirmation of this experience.

With time, I have come to see that it is not about treating or even relieving symptoms (although this is achieved in the process).

The symptoms are relieved but this is a byproduct of a ‘deeper’ process: re-connection with the Original Self (or Inner Self).

And so, looking at things from this perspective, I can now see how this intention shines brightly in every point name, description and uses (that is, if you are willing to see it!). Like an allusive butterfly, this light sparkles briefly, inviting you in, but you must be ready to follow the barely visible traces.

Chinese Medicine as Heart Medicine - Beyond Symptom Management through Re-Connection with the Self

Inspired by my mother and my own Guides and Spirit, I am delighted to share that I am going to start putting together a course where I will share the Spirit of Chinese Medicine as Heart Medicine, and how we can re-connect with these innermost resources tangibly and powerfully.

This is the very first step, but as I start to plan this out, here are a few of the things I am planning to cover

  • Revisiting the Dis-ease model

  • The role of the body in Health

  • When you have ‘done the work’ but the body still hurts

  • The body as a Portal: contacting our Spirit from within

  • Understanding our Organ system and its Spirit

  • Healing beyond symptoms: the Inner Light (or Spirit) as organising intelligence in Chinese Medicine

  • Acupressure to contact our Spirit

  • Releasing layers beyond narrative: fascia, energy body, meridians, organs.

This course is very much something that fits within my wider life-inspiration and what drives me to share and create connection.

I plan to involve other absolutely amazing and outstanding practitioners who can contribute to this. An opportunity to learn ‘hands on’ about the power of intention, intuition and connection when it comes to health and very real health conditions.
